History of the Splayd
Introduced in Australia in 1962, where barbecues and buffet
lunches are popular, Splayd's are a popular wedding gift in

The inventor William McArthur observed the awkward balancing
of plates of food with three utensils and invented the 3/1
Splayd. From 1943 to 1967 his wife Suzanne used and sold them
in her Martha Washington Cafe in Sydney.
Australian tableware manufacturer Stokes Pty Ltd. bought it
in 1960 and redesigned it for mass-production, and by 1991
sold 4.75 million in 52 countries.
